The challenger supermarkets giving consumers a grocery alternative

As the ACCC Supermarkets Inquiry continues, Costco and ALDI continue to grow their share of the Australian groceries market

Aussies love an underdog and watching the growth of competitor brands like ALDI and Costco is exciting and positive for competition in Australia. With the ACCC Supermarkets Inquiry in full swing, Fonto have been undertaking research to understand how Aussies feel about their grocery retailers and how their spend is changing.

But before we get to that, we looked at our most recent grocery expenditure data and tracked the organic growth two of the main supermarket challengers.

Grocery market share, Costco and ALDI 2022-2024

While both still have limited locations, their national share of grocery spend has continued to climb steadily since 2022.

Combined, the challengers have grown from 10.9% market share in January 2022, peaking at 16.1% in November 2024.

While employing different customer and retail strategies, both brands offer grocery shoppers a viable alternative and have continued to attract a larger customer base.
