Grocery pricing and the battle for your morning coffee

In the spotlight with the Fear & Greed podcast

Fonto’s founder Ben Dixon was interviewed by leading Australian business podcast Fear and Greed this week, covering a range of consumer spending shifts ranging from Quick Service Restaurants, to Online Retail movements, and the battleground for your morning coffee.

SUPERMARKET TRENDS

With 70% of consumers having noticed misleading prices in supermarkets, the consumer concern in groceries is rising. 81% of consumers Fonto spoke to in its research had experienced and noticed ‘shrinkflation’ - the practice of providing a smaller product at the same price as before.

Furthermore, 68% of shoppers who had noticed these things –told Fonto they plan to change their grocery shopping behaviours as a result.

COFFEE WARS

Another topic of conversation was the so called “Coffee Wars”, where Quick Service Restaurants are investing heavily in the quality and convenience of their morning coffee experience. This in turn has taken market share from pure-play coffee providers, despite brands such as Starbucks still being stronger amongst younger generations.

ONLINE RETAIL

As Fonto has previously reported, for the month of October Temu (20%) has overtaken eBay (17%) for market share of pure-play online retailers for the first time, as it continues its rapid growth as a challenger to market leader Amazon (50%). Despite this, Temu continues to have a lower average spend and frequency of purchase, but has grown rapidly since its launch in 2023.
