For many, 2024 has been a tougher year than recent ones on record, with everyone affected in some way by the increasing cost of living and other economic factors.
One place that seems unaffected so far however is in food delivery, where Aussies continue to maintain their appetite for spending (pun intended).
An examination of recent Fonto data has shown that demand has not abated for the category, with market leader Uber Eats being consumed by more than 28% of the population in October 2024.
DoorDash also continued its rise as a relatively new market entrant, finding its way into the wallets of 12% of Aussies, a slow but steady climb throughout the year.
Uber Eats continued to maintain its dominance throughout the year, holding more than 63% market share to date and perhaps most importantly – their customers’ loyalty.
While customers spent more than 70% of their food delivery dollars with the app (pictured), DoorDash and Menulog customers continued to shop around, spending the vast majority of their category dollars elsewhere.
2024 also saw a continuation of misfortune for the incumbent Menulog, as market share continued to decline from more than 24% in early 2022, to below 10% for the September 2024 quarter. This comes despite a number of new initiatives launched in 2024, including waiving of delivery fees for 100 days from August and support of OzHarvest’s Unite to Feed Australia initiative during December.
Doordash similarly has continued its momentum to improve share and penetration against Uber Eats, launching an alliance with Amazon Prime recently to provide free delivery to members.
At Fonto, we don’t just measure the dollars and cents our members spend – we actively survey them within 48 hours of transactions, to get robust insights into their purchase behaviour.
